The first-week playbook: from match to first reveal

A day-by-day guide for the first seven days after you match with someone — built around games, so nobody has to carry the chat.

The first week after a match has a shape. Most people improvise it, which is why most matches don't survive it. Here's the version with a plan.

Day 1 — skip the opener entirely

Don't write the perfect first message; there isn't one. Send a format instead: the compatibility quiz if they're not on GWP yet, or a round of Hot Takes if they are. You're not being lazy — you're replacing an audition with a game two people can win together.

Day 2 — the reveal is the conversation

Whatever the score was, it's the topic. "HOW did you pick espresso martini" is a better second message than anything either of you would have composed cold. Disagreements are the good part — every one is a story exchange waiting to happen.

Day 3 — go asynchronous on purpose

Send a game they can answer on their own clock — Finish the Sentence or Pet Peeves. The point isn't the content; it's establishing that this thread doesn't demand instant replies to stay alive. Threads with breathing room live longer.

Day 4 — the Daily question

By now you'll both have seen the daily drop — one question, the same for every pair in the world, revealed only when you've both answered. Answer it every day this week. A streak is a tiny shared project, and shared projects are how strangers become an *us*.

Day 5 — escalate the stakes slightly

Two Truths and a Lie. It's the first game where you're trading real biography, and the lying makes the truth-telling feel safe. (Craft guide here.)

Day 6 — plan something with a format

Look at what the week told you. Farmers-market person or sleep-till-noon person? Plan-every-hour or wing-it? Pick a date idea that matches what you actually learned, not the generic drinks default.

Day 7 — say the quiet part

Somewhere in this week there was a reveal that surprised you. Tell them which one. "I genuinely did not expect you to pick real camping" is intimacy wearing a game's clothing — which is the only kind that's easy to start.

None of this requires charm. It requires pressing play seven times. The charm shows up on its own once the format is doing the lifting.

Play it, don't read it.
